Gran Canaria shopping is a great idea because, compared to mainland
Europe, prices here are cheap. We would like you to get the best
shopping experience, and have carefully handpicked the best shopping
centres on the island. The best time of the year to shop is during the
sales, which take place twice a year: right after Three Kings Day
(January 6th) and in the summer (beginning of July). Each sale lasts for two months.
In the summer of 2022, the central government of Spain passed a few unpopular laws to save electricity. Showcase lights have to be turned off by 10 p.m. (if the shop is closed). Air-conditioning can’t be turned on in shops unless it gets warmer than 27ºC. These laws were approved for all of Spain, without even thinking about the Canary Islands’ warm temperatures. Shopkeepers are upset but need to follow the rules anyway. Customers that feel hot, will spend less time shopping. So, if you feel a little hot, it’s not you. It’s the air-conditioner.
Remember to take your own bags if you go to the supermarkets, otherwise you will be charged 0.02-0.10 Euros for a plastic bag or 0.50-0.60 Euros for a large re-usable cloth bag.
